Lucky Number 3: Victory Goes To Mamitu Daska As 101st Zazzle Bay To Breakers Race Enters 2nd Century
2011's second place female finisher takes it all at the 101st running
SAN FRANCISCO (May 20, 2023) - The 101st annual Zazzle Bay to Breakers 12K, one of the world's largest and oldest footraces, today made history with Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia winning the overall race with the time of 39:02.4. Course record holder, Sammy Kitwara of Kenya, triumphed in the men's division and placed second overall with the time of 34:40.5.
Luck was with Daska for the 2012 race: the 2012 Zazzle Bay to Breakers winner placed second in 2011 and third in 2010. Kitwara holds the course record from the 2009 race and the world record for the 12K race.
Daska and Kitwara were also the first male and female to cross the summit at Hayes Street Hill.
"As we kick-off our second century in the Bay Area, we are thrilled that this race continues to attract such a world-class athletic field," said Angela Fang, general manager of Zazzle Bay to Breakers. "Having a finish like this as our race turns the corner to a new century will continue to set the tone for the athletes that come forward attempting to win the crown in future years."
